Swell Artist Collective is an open studio and Art Gallery located in Boise, Idaho’s historic downtown, on the lower level of the Old Mercantile Building in The BoDo District.

By combining individual artistic practices and ideas into a common space, their mission revolves around creating a vibrant studio and gallery environment that is open to the public and intent on helping bolster the community's rapidly-growing arts culture. Swell will be host to both First Thursday and independently organized artistic events while maintaining hours of operation during which people can visit.

Lorelle Rau

Swell Artist Collective’s Lorelle Rau is an art consultant and professional artist, a collagist who composes elegant works of hand-cut paper art. Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, her career was set into motion when she was very young. Her mom was a ceramic artist, and Rau remembers sitting in her studio late at night, sketching while her mother molded clay. As she grew older, she continued to apply herself to developing her artistic skills, taking art classes and volunteering at the local art museum. These early experiences instilled into her a strong sense of purpose, and guided her pursuit of a career in the arts. She was able to transform passions into a profession—and perhaps in quite the same way—she transforms fragments of paper into a comprehensive body of work.

Her harmonious compositions piece together snippets of found paper and appropriated imagery to create graceful linear vistas and abstract scenes that coordinate color, texture, and shape with balanced intention. Her process is guided by an intuitive context in which these elements come together; adding and extracting forms, expertly bringing line and detail into play within the landscape to create pleasing and consistent works of art inspired by nature. Nature, specifically hiking and being in the mountains, informs her work as an artist and also as a professional. An inherently creative person, the necessity to make things is ingrained in her. Having an artistic outlet is important to her, and she feels fortunate to have accomplished this in her life and in her work. Rau earned her MA in Arts Administration from the Savannah College of Art and Design; BA in Studio Art and a BS in Arts Management with a Minor in Business from Appalachian State University. While her formal background is in Arts Administration, she has exhibited her own work extensively on the East Coast and in Boise, Idaho where she now lives with her husband.
